G25. Charles Cornwell COLCHESTER was christened on 22 Feb 1788 in Saint Peter, Ipswich, Suffolk.1 He died on 17 Apr 1876 in Denmark Hill, London.35 He was probably a godson of Emerson Cornwell. In 1830 he was listed in Pigots Directory as a tallow chandler and soap boiler in St Peters Street, Ipswich which suggests that he had taken over his father's business.49 In 1833 he paid £8767 8s 6d in tax on the soap that he boiled, so he must have been doing very well. As the tax was roughly £25 per ton, he must have manufactured over 350 tons of soap in that year.48 He was then living in his father Benjamin's old house in St. Peter's St and he or his son Charles was listed there in Whites Directory of 1844. He worked with William George Colchester as a tallow merchant in London becoming a partner in 1853 and retiring in 1873.19 He was listed in the 1839 Pigots directory as a tallow chandler in Friars Lane and also as a Russia broker at the Baltic Exchange.36 In 1826 he subscribed to a book of poems by Eliza Acton.31 In his will he left everything to his grandson, Charles Edward Colchester. It was valued at less than £1500. A C Colchester was listed in Whites 1874 directory as Trustee of the Ipswich Borough Charities whom we think was this one, but a review of the Trustees' minutes would prove it.35 He was married to Mary BYE before 1809. The marriage was recorded in the Ipswich Journal of 20 February 1813 "Thursday was married in London, Mr Charles Cornwell Colchester, of this town, to Miss Bye, youngest daughter of the late I Bye Esqr of Holborn".25 She came from a family owning many acres in Pennsylvania, the original grant for which is now in the possession of Rosemary Denham.19 Children of Charles Cornwell COLCHESTER and Mary BYE were: |
