G36. Charles Bye COLCHESTER was born in 1815.47 He died in 1871 in Cannes.19 He seems to have taken over the soap making business in Ipswich after the death of his uncle Henry in 1839; presumably he had obtained some business experience with the firm first.19 However there is some confusion as he had the same first name as his father. He later moved to London and became a partner with his uncle William as tallow merchant and Russia broker in 1851. He involved the firm in many interests other than tallow broking. He was one of the chief promoters, on his own account, of a larger and doubtful banking corporation which failed. Suitably his office was in South Sea House. He went bankrupt for a large sum and went abroad.19
Giles Colchester has an oil portrait of him and a letter justifying himself for going bankrupt. Benjamin Colchester has a fob watch of his inscribed with his name in 1835 which had been used by Maurice Herbert Colchester and subsequently Maurice Travers Colchester. He was married to Hester GWYNNE on 27 Jun 1843.25 The marriage was recorded in the Ipswich Journal of 1 July 1843: "Married 27th ult. at Burnham, Norfolk, Charles Bye Colchester, Esqr of Milton Place, London, to Hester, daughter of Anthony Gwynne Esqr late of Baron's Hall, Norfolk."25
After Charles died, she divided her time between living at Cannes and at Harcourt, Derby Road, Bournemouth.47 She died on 6 Oct 1902 and left effects of £9,494-3-10d to Charles Edward Colchester (except that she outlived him) and to his sister Emily. In addition she left various bits and pieces as follows:
