G12B. Samuel COLCHESTER was born in 1816 in Needham Market, Suffolk. He was a cabinet maker in Needham Market or Creeting St Peter. He got Mary Soundy, a widow of 3 years, and a few years older than him, into the family way when he was aged 24 - so he had to marry her. Notice of the marriage appeared in the Ipswich Journal on 12/9/1840. After the marriage he moved into a grocery shop, probably 68 High St Needham Market, previously owned by his wife's first husband, Edward Soundy and carried on the grocery business[2] and is recorded there in the census on 6 June 1841 with an apprentice grocer and a servant.

He died of typhus fever on 21 November 1841 at Harwich Essex when only 25 years old. We don't know why he was in Harwich, but there was a steam ferry service between Ipswich and Harwich, making it easily accessible in a day trip.

Sarah Rosier, who lived in Harwich and was present at his death, registered it. The burial certificate gives that he was a resident of Harwich - which doesn't accord with the 1841 census or the epitaph. On his tomb in St Nicholas's Churchyard, Harwich, was written:

"Samuel Colchester late of Needham Market, Suffolk, d. nov. 21, 1841 aged 25
Snatched swift from these tumultuous scenes,
To where Life knows not what affliction means;
Resigned, adore whate'er Thy will decree,
My faith in Jesus and my hope in Thee.
Oh! Happy Hour! when thro' a sea of woes
I reach the harbour where the just repose." [40]

He was married to Mary Maria Alderson SOUNDY on 9 Sep 1840 in Creeting St Peter.[6] She was born in about 1810, a little older than Samuel, the daughter of Robert Lind, a surgeon.[2] She was the widow of Edward Soundy, a grocer, whom she had married in 1827 and he had died in 1837. She had one surviving child by this first marriage, Josiah Tunmer Soundy who later went to South Africa. Three years after the death of Samuel, she married for a third time to Edward Page in Sleaford Lincolnshire.

Children of Samuel COLCHESTER and Mary Maria Alderson SOUNDY were:
+H1 i. Samuel Hare COLCHESTER. See H1.
