G3. Samuel COLCHESTER was christened on 9 Apr 1746 in Barking, Suffolk and was buried on 18 Dec 1819 in Creeting All Saints, Suffolk.6 His grandfather Samuel Ruffell left him £20 in 1771.2 He farmed in Creeting All Saints.2,10 The will of Elizabeth Turner mentions that he occupied with others the land Saffron Panes in Creeting St Mary.11

He would have been farming through the time of the Napoleonic Wars - which was both a good time and a scary time to be in that business. Napoleon tried to block the food supplies to England. The reaction was both the militia bills and an increase in the number of Enclosure Acts which were to encourage farming. A letter from Lord Euston to Sir Charles Davers shows the impact on Suffolk of the war. He recommended "that in the case of invasion all horses and draft cattle that cannot be driven out of reach of the enemy be shot, that all the axle trees or wheels of all carriages likely to fall into the enemy" hands be broken.12

Samuel subscribed to the Needham Market Society for the Prosecution of Felons. His death was recorded in the Ipswich Journal 24/12/1819 "died Wednesday sennight after a long illness aged 73, Mr Samuel Colchester of Creeting All Saints". The Suffolk Chronicle records him as dying on 18 Dec aged 87, 15 extra years being added, which only goes to prove that newspapers didn't check their facts even in those days! Afterwards his premises, farming stock and household furniture were advertised in the Ipswich Journal 9/9/1820 to be auctioned off on 26 & 27 September 1820.2

He was married to Hannah WILSON on 24 May 1771 in Creeting All Saints, Suffolk.6 Hannah WILSON was born in 1751 and died in Aug 1814 in Creeting All Saints. The Suffolk Chronicle of 27/8/1814 records that "Saturday died, aged 63 Mrs Colchester the wife of Mr Samuel Colchester of Creeting All Saints."2
