A27 John COLCHESTER was born about 1549. He died in 1605 in Barking, Suffolk.12,19 He was a trustee under John Flegg's will who was from a family of rich clothiers in Needham Market.10,20 There is a reference in the manorial rolls to the purchase of a parcel of land called Queditch and a close called Pisseyes with the "intention that the profits thereof are conveyed to use of the testament and last will of John Flegg donor."10 His father bequeathed him in 1579 £13-6-8 (20 marks) plus an additional 40/- & 26/8, 2 bushels of wheat and a share of the household goods being paid over 5 years by his brothers Thomas and Robert.18 His will was as follows19:
In the name of God Amen the xxvijth daye of Auguste in the yere of our Lorde God one Thousande sixe hundreth & ffyve I John Colchester of Nedeham Markette in the countye of Suffolk & Diocese of Norwich Singleman do order & make this my laste will & testamente in manner & forme followinge that is to saye First I comende my sowle into the mercyfull handes of allmightye God my maker redemer and sanctifier and my bodye I comytte to the earth to be buried in christian buriall
Item I will geve & beqeth unto Elizabeth Goode the daughter of Thomas Goode & Agnes his wife my sister the some of Tenne powndes of currante monye of Englande to be payde to hir or hyr asssinges within one whole yere after my decease
Item I will geve & bequeth to Thomas Goode the sonne of the sayde Thomas Godde and Agnes my sister the some Tenne Powndes of curante monye of Englande to be payde to hym or his assignes within one whole yer after my decease and I will & my mynde is that the sayde twentye Powndes shalbe employde to the best proofe to the use of the sayde Elizabeth & Thomas untill theye shall accomplishe theire severall age of XXI yeares or dayes of mariage wich shall firste come and if eyther of them dep[ar]te this liefe before the sayde tymes Then the survivor to have the whole twentye Powndes And if theye both dye then the same XX [£2] to remayrie to the use of my sayde sister Agnes hir heires executors administrators or assinges
Item I will geve & bequeth to Thonysen my sister the wiefe of Richarde Brewse the some of tenne Powndes of currante moneye of Englande to be payd to hir hir executors administrators or assignes within one whole yere after my decease
Item I geve & bequeth to John Colchester the sonne of my brother William deceased the some of Forty shillinges of like monye to be payde to hym hys execut[ors] or assignes w[ith]in one year after my decease
Item I give & bequeth to (Bridgette erased) Agnes Colchester [presumably Anne] my goddaughter my brother Thomas his daughter Forty shillinges of like monye to be payde to hir at hir age of xxi yeres or daye of marriage w[hic]h shall first come
Item I geve & bequethe to the poor people of Nedeham & Barkinge VIs VIIId to be distributed amongste them by the dyscretion of myne executor where moste nede is
All the reste of my goodes both moveable & unmoveables whatsoever after my debtes payde & funerall charges deducted I will & my mynde is that it shalle equallye p[ar]ted & devided amongeste the children of my brothers & sisters wich have no legacye in this my laste will & testamente geven & bequethed to them
And I order & make my frende Nicholas Babbe my Sole executor of this my laste will & testamente leaving hym to see the same performed as my truste is in hym allowinge to hym selfe suche resonable charges as is meeke and conveniente for his paynes takinge in that behalfe these beinge witnesses here of Roger Collchester Alexander Pratte Thomas Goode
